How to Make Clay That Dries Hard

You can make clay that dries to a hard consistency with ingredients you probably have in your kitchen. Perfect for younger craft lovers, the clay can be molded into ornaments, toys and Christmas decorations. Leave the clay to dry and then paint as desired. You can add food coloring if you prefer not to paint it. Lacquer the crafts for a longer-lasting finish. Keep the clay in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you are ready for crafting.

Things You'll Need

Bowl
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 3/4 cups of warm water
Food coloring (optional)
Paint and paint brush (optional)

Instructions

  Place the flour and salt into the bowl. Mix the flour and salt prior to adding water.

  Add warm water and mix well. If you are going to add food coloring, do so now. When the ingredients are mixed together, knead the clay for at least 10 minutes.

  Create ornaments or decorations. Roll the clay out flat and cut out shapes with cookie cutters and knives, or mold the clay into shapes with your fingers. Leave the clay ornaments to dry.

  Paint the ornaments with acrylic or oil paints. Leave to dry.
