How to Make a Small-Scale Parachute

Small-scale parachutes help teach children about wind resistance, drag and deceleration. They are also a good excuse to throw things from windows, roofs or balconies. You can make your own small-scale parachute using common items around your house. Build the parachutes, attach a payload and have fun throwing them out the window.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the handles off of a plastic grocery store bag with scissors, but leave about one inch of each handle attached to the bag.

    • 2

Tie the end of a 2-foot string to the stump left from one of the handles, then tie the other end of the string to the stump of the handle diagonally across from it.

    • 3

Tie a second string to the remaining two stumps.

    • 4

Hold the bag at its center at the top of the chute so the strings droop toward the ground. Thread an 8-inch string through the loops formed by the hanging strings, then tie the 8-inch string so it secures the drooping strings together at their lowest point. Use the tag ends of this string to attach a payload to the parachute.
