How to Make Homemade Clay Without Salt

Modeling clay allows children of all ages to express their inner Michelangelo or Rodin with less mess. Take the craft project one step further by teaching kids how to make their own homemade clay. Using safe, non-toxic ingredients to create the clay gives parents peace of mind and provides the opportunity to teach simple math and how to follow a recipe. Use inexpensive items found around the home to create clay that does not contain salt.

Pour 2 cups unbleached flour, 1 cup cornstarch and 1 teaspoon cream of tartar into a large cooking pot.

    • 2

Add 1 cup water and 1/2 cup canola oil to the pot. Cook the ingredients over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to thicken, or approximately four to five minutes.

    • 3

Add 3 drops to 4 drops natural food coloring to the pot. Stir the food coloring into the ingredients and add more until the desired color is achieved. Natural food coloring is manufactured from food extracts and contains no artificial dyes or chemicals

Remove the large pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
