How to Make a Yo-Yo With a Looped Double String

The double-loop yo-yo is often used by individuals learning how to yo-yo because the double loop does not allow the yo-yo to spin independently when it reaches the bottom of the string. To reduce the ability of the yo-yo to spin, the double loop is commonly used with a fixed-axle yo-yo; more advanced yo-yoers use trans-axle yo-yos that have an independently spinning axle. As the yo-yo operator gains confidence and skill, the double loop can be altered to a single-looped string on the axle.

Instructions

  1. Fixed Axle

    • 1

Lift the yo-yo string to about 3 inches above the belly button and let the other end of the string fall to the ground. Use scissors to cut the string to the distance from just above the belly button to the ground.

    • 2

Fold over one end of the string and tie an overhand knot to form the yo-yo loop. Pull the rest of the string through the yo-yo loop to create a slipknot. Place the slipknot on the middle finger of the dominant hand and pull it tight in the area between the first and second knuckles.

    • 3

Split the yo-yo string in two at the end without the slipknot. Twist one end of the split string into a loop and place it over the fixed-axle yo-yo onto the axle until it loops around the axle twice.

    • 4

Twist the two strands of the string together again to form a single piece of string. With the double loop in place on the axle, the yo-yo cannot spin at the bottom of the string.

    • 5

Wind the yo-yo string by placing a finger over the gap between the sides of the axle; the string should be wound over the finger on the first turn of the string. Subsequent turns of the string should be placed into the groove for the string.
