How to Make Soft Play Clay

There are a variety of different play-clay recipes that can be found online and in children's craft books. These play clays can be made at home and in minimal time. Children old enough and mature enough will enjoy making this play clay with you -- or you can make it when they're in the other room. This play clay can save a rainy day by keeping your kids entertained for a long time.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • Cutting board

Instructions

      Place the baking soda and cornstarch together in a pot and mix with a spoon.

      Add the water and stir the mixture until it's smooth.

      Pour the mixture into a pot on the stove and stir it over medium heat until it boils. If your children are helping you, this step should be closely monitored. Continue to stir until the mixture is a thick, cohesive consistency, similar to mashed potatoes.

      Place the mixture onto a cutting board to cool. Wait until the mixture is cool to touch.

      Place several drops of food coloring over the mixture, then mix it with your hands.

      Repeat Step 5 until the play clay is the color you wish it to be.

      When you're finished with the play clay, store it in an airtight container to make it last longer.
