How to Make Putty With Glue & Baking Soda

Putty -- commonly called silly putty -- is a substance made of non-toxic ingredients that children and playful adults use as a toy. It is malleable and soft. While sold commercially, putty is simple to make. With common household ingredients and a few minutes of time, you can make silly putty. It requires no cooking or special tools and is ready almost instantly. The key to making putty is mixing the ingredients in the correct proportion.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2/5 cup of hot water with a teaspoon of borax and a teaspoon of baking soda in a bowl. Mix the ingredients thoroughly with a stir straw. Mix 1/5 cup of cold water with 2/5 cup of white glue. Stir the ingredients.

    • 2

Mix the contents of the two bowls together. Stir them together with a mixing spoon; then begin kneading the putty with your hands. Add a small amount of food coloring to the mixture. Knead the putty, check the color and add more food coloring if you want the putty darker.

    • 3

Place the putty on wax paper. Allow it to dry for four hours. Moisture will seep from the putty as it is drying. Knead the putty every few hours. If it becomes too dry and begins to crumble, mix the moisture that weeps onto the wax paper back in with the putty.
