How to Make Goo With Borax & Elmers Glue

An easy-to-make toy is Borax and Elmer's glue goo. This material is liquid-like when you let it sit but becomes harder when you play with the goo in your hands. Glue mixed with water -- a polymer -- becomes thicker when you add Borax because the Borax holds molecules in the substance together. The more you move the goo, the more molecule connections get crossed and the more difficult it is for the goo to liquify.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one 8-ounce bottle of Elmer's glue with three teaspoons of warm water in a mixing bowl with a spoon. Alternatively, you can shake the mixture in a lidded cup.

    • 2

Mix one teaspoon Borax and one cup of warm water in a separate mixing bowl or cup with a separate spoon. Stir or mix the substance until the Borax dissolves.

    • 3

Scoop one teaspoon of the Borax-water mix and add it to the glue-water mix. Stir with your hands until well blended. Add another teaspoon of the Borax-water mix. Repeat until the goo reaches a consistency that you like.
