Making play dough at home is your safest bet to creating the healthiest possible mixture for your child. The toy is easy and cheap to make. Play dough has been a favorite pastime for children since its creation in 1956. At the time, the company, Hasbro, trademarked the name "Play-Doh" but the term has grown into a generic reference to the claylike substance used to create an assortment of concoctions.

  • Medium pot
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup salt

Instructions

      Place the flour into the pot. Add water, cream of tartar, oil and salt. Turn the stove to medium heat.

      Stir the ingredients consistently until the ingredients are well-incorporated. The texture should resemble play dough.

      Scoop the dough onto a counter and kneed. Divide the dough into four parts.

      Dent the top of each section of dough with your fingers. Add the food coloring and then squeeze the dough until the coloring is well-incorporated.
