How to Make a Toy Lightsaber Out of a Flashlight

Many Star Wars lightsaber toys are available in stores, but these are often made of cheap plastic and do not light up. You can build a lightsaber toy that glows like the real thing using a flashlight. After you add a few enhancements to the flashlight to make it look more technological, your lightsaber will be ready to defeat the evil Sith and save the galaxy.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight
  • Silver spray paint (optional)
  • Rubber O-rings
  • Epoxy
  • Plastic gems
  • Bubble solution in a long plastic tube
  • Black paint (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Find a chrome silver flashlight that is at least 10 inches long. If you cannot find a chrome one, paint one with silver spray paint and let it dry. Cover the lens with masking tape to protect it from the paint.

    • 2

Roll three rubber O-rings onto the flashlight, positioned near the top. Leave 1/2-inch of space between the rings. Glue the rings in place with epoxy.

    • 3

Roll several more O-rings onto the bottom portion of the flashlight, positioning them next to each other to form a grip. Glue them in place with epoxy. The number of rings depends on the length of your flashlight.

    • 4

Glue on a few small plastic gems to simulate lights and buttons.

    • 5

Empty a container of bubble-blowing solution that comes in a long, colored plastic tube. This solution can be found in toy stores.

    • 6

Wash out the tube with soap and water and allow it to dry.

    • 7

Glue the tube to the flashlight in front of the lens. Paint over any exposed lens around the tube with black paint so that all of the light will be concentrated in the tube, making it glow.
