How to Clean Diecast Model Toys

Diecast toys saved since childhood have a lot of sentimental value, and possibly high monetary value, too. The metals, plastic and rubber that compose diecast toys are durable. The objects are intended for play, after all. Since the materials are so lasting, the process of caring for them is not arduous. If the model is a display piece, it only needs cleaning one to three times a year, at most. Diecast toys still in active toy box rotation should only receive cleaning when they are visibly dirty.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the toy with a paper towel, unless it is sticky. Most dirt and grime will wipe off the toy with ease.

    • 2

Dampen a washcloth with warm water. Wipe stubborn or sticky stains off the surface with the washcloth. Take care around mirrors or other delicate details on the toy.

    • 3

Dry the model with a hairdryer set to low, if it is a collectible. If the item is vintage and delicate, use as little contact as possible when cleaning it.

    • 4

Soak a toy if it is caked with a substance like dry glue or food. Mix warm water and dish soap. Place the toy in the mixture. Check it periodically to see if the offending material has dissolved or loosened. Continue soaking until the toy is clean.

    • 5

Apply a small amount of car wax to the surface of a collectible to protect its surface and promote shine. Rub the wax on the model with a soft washcloth.
