Things You'll Need
Instructions
Place a drinking glass upside down on the cereal box. Use the pencil to trace around the glass to form six circle shapes that are all the same size. A diameter of about 3 to 4 inches works best for the circle shapes.
Cut out the circles with sharp scissors.
Mark the center of the circle shapes with the ink pen. Find the center in each one by using a drawing compass.
Place the circle shapes on a folded towel one at a time on a flat surface. Use the tip of the ink pen to force a hole in the center where you made the mark. The towel prevents the point of the ink pen from damaging the flat surface.
Slide the sharpened end of the pencil through each hole so that the circle shapes fit snugly around the pencil. Repeat this with each circle.
Stack the circle shapes on top of each other with the cardboard side of the last circle facing up. Check to ensure the center holes match up well.
Tape the stack together with the cellophane tape. Do this with at least four pieces of tape around the edges. (see ref 1 step 3) This allows them to stay together when the top spins.
Decorate the top circle -- the one with the cardboard side up -- with colored permanent markers. Draw geometric shapes, stars, letters of the alphabet or any colorful design you desire.
Slide the circle stack onto the pencil, with the artwork facing up. Place the stack as close to the sharpened section of the pencil as possible.
Lay a white piece of paper on a flat surface.
Position the pencil top in between the palms of your hands -- your thumbs should be facing up. Slide one palm briskly forward to spin and release the top over the white paper. Watch the spinning top draw a design as it dances across the paper. The colorful art on top is interesting to watch as well while it spins.
