How to Build a Bungee Rocket

Bungee rockets are foam toys hand-launched with a rubber band, which is part of the rocket. They are seen at promotional events -- with the company logo on the side of the rocket -- company picnics, outdoor parties and in backyards all over suburbia. A small loop of the rubber band protrudes from the nose of the rocket. The launch engineer inserts one index finger in the loop, pulls back the rocket with the other hand, aims and releases. The bungee rocket speeds to its target.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a rectangle out of the neoprene 3-by-8 to 12 inches. When the rectangle is rolled up lengthwise into a cylinder 3 inches around, the edges should meet, but there should not be enough room to look through the tube. The measurements depend on the thickness of the Neoprene. Adjust the width of the rectangle until the rolled-up tube is a tight as possible, while still allowing the edges to meet. Shove a large rubber band down the middle of the tube before gluing the edges together to make the tube permanent.

Make a model template to use for the fins, to make all the fins the same. Cut out four fins and attach them equidistant around one end of the rocket. You can experiment with designs to find which ones look the coolest, and make the rocket go the furthest, but a good design to start with is the 30-60-90 degree right triangle where the short side of the triangle is about the width of the rocket body. The fins should be glued on so the short side of the triangles are about a 1/2 inch from the rear of the rocket.

Anchor the rubber band to the rear of the rocket by putting a small piece of Neoprene in the loop, pulling it tight to the rocket by pulling from the end of the rubber band protruding from the nose. Glue the rubber band in place. You can make the bungee rocket look a lot better by drawing insignia on the side and writing NASA somewhere on the rocket.
