How to Make Toys for the Snow

When it snows, most children look forward to sledding down a snow-covered hill, building a snowman and making snow angels. The snow also has children eyeing the latest models of sleds on display at the local toy store. While fancy sleds and other toys look appealing for the snow, homemade toys often provide just as much outdoor fun on winter days.

Instructions

  1. Make a Sled

    • 1

Fold a cardboard box of the desired sled size so it lays flat.

    • 2

Cut a trash bag to cover both sides of the box and secure it onto the box using waterproof tape.

    • 3

Poke holes at six inch intervals along the two long sides of the box, stopping six inches from each end.

    • 4

Tie and knot the rope in one hole at the end of one side of the sled.

    • 5

Lace the rope through the remainder of the holes, going up one side and down the other side. Knot the end of the rope in the last hole. Pull the rope so a handle is formed at the front of the sled.

    Snow Coloring

    • 6

Fill a spray bottle with water and seven or eight drops of food coloring.

    • 7

Shake the bottle to mix the food coloring with the water and spray a small amount on the snow to test the color. Add more food coloring if the color is not bright enough.

    • 8

Place cookie cutters or homemade stencils onto the snow. Spray inside the cookie cutters or stencils to create pictures and words in the snow.
