How to Make a Playhouse Out of a Card Table

Improvising a playhouse out of a card table doesn't take long and requires only a few items you may have around the house. This project comes together in minutes. It's a project for adults to do for children and is not intended for young children to do themselves, although older children can help.

Things You'll Need

  • Card table
  • Twin or queen-size flat sheet (that you're willing to cut up)
  • Scissors
  • Cable zip ties
  • 4 slit-tube wire covers (optional)
  • 2 or 3 blankets
  • Several pillows

Instructions

    • 1

Open the card table and stand it up. Push one side against the wall. Drape the flat sheet over the table until the sheet covers all of the visible sides. Tuck the excess under the legs of the table, as the floor of the playhouse, and behind the side of the table that is against the wall.

    • 2

Use scissors to make a long slit in the front so that children can get in and out. Make slits in the sheet next to the table leg on either side of the ledge, then slip a cable tie through the slits. Push the tip of the cable tie through the slotted end and pull to tighten. Repeat this for the other legs.

    • 3

Look under the table, up inside the playhouse. There will be levers on each legs that fold it up. Open a split-tube wire cover and place it over the mechanism that folds the legs up. Use two cable ties to secure the tube, then repeat this process on the other levers. This step is optional, but it will prevent the children from bringing the card table down on their heads.

    • 4

Spread the blankets on the floor of the playhouse and then throw pillows in, or let the children arrange this part themselves. When they are done, you can remove all the cable ties and the split tubes to use the card table. Keep the sheet for future play sessions.
