How to Build Mini Rollercoasters

Energy conservation is the principle behind unpowered roller coasters. When the vehicle is started on the track, its potential energy is changed into kinetic energy. In order to make it around a loop, extra energy is needed to keep the vehicle on the track without falling to the floor. Make simple miniature roller coasters out of foam and experiment with the design to see what works best.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the foam tubes in half. The indentation made by the hollow area in small tubes is a perfect track for marbles. Use larger tubes if you plan to use small cars or other objects on the mini roller coaster.

    • 2

Secure one end of the foam tube on a wall with masking tape. The bigger the first loop is, the higher on the wall you will need to tape the end in order to get enough velocity to make it around the loop. Bend the foam to create flat areas of the track, winding sections and loops.

    • 3

Due to the flexibility of the foam, you will be able to change and adjust it as desired. If the marble or other vehicle does not make it around the loop, adjust the roller coaster so the marble can gain more speed before attempting it. Place a cup at the far end to catch the marbles.
