How to Make a Plastic Light Saber

A new generation of children is being introduced to the wonders of "Star Wars," and with that comes the desire to play with a light saber of their very own. With a few inexpensive materials from a local home improvement store, these are easy to make.

Things You'll Need

  • Schedule 40 clear plastic PVC pipe, approximately 3 feet in length (if this is difficult to find at a home improvement store, check an aquarium supply store or pet store)
  • Flashlight with diameter similar to the inner diameter of the pipe.
  • Hand saw
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut PVC pipe to desired length, using hand saw. Most children will be satisfied with a length of approximately 3 feet, but some parents may find a shorter length better for younger children or for play inside the house. A shorter length also makes the light more visible.

    • 2

Fit the flashlight into one end of the plastic pipe. In order to get the best possible fit, buy the flashlight and piping at the same location. Getting a fit as close as possible will make for a stronger saber. The flashlight should be be able to fit into the opening. Be sure the on/off switch on the flashlight is accessible when the flashlight is placed into the pipe. For stability, place the flashlight as high into the plastic tube as possible while still allowing access to the on/off button and the flashlight bottom to change batteries.

    • 3

Attach the flashlight to the pipe by carefully securing it with duct tape.

    • 4

Test the saber by turning the flashlight on and off and swinging it around to ensure the pipe doesn't come off the flashlight.
