Robosapien V2 Tips

The robotics physicist, Mark W. Tilden, designed the Robosapien V2 remote-controlled robot, which WooWee Group Limited released in 2005. According to the online computer resource, PCmag.com, the Robosapien V2 is larger, stronger and more intelligent than its predecessor -- the original Robosapien -- but is also more expensive. At the time of its release, the Robosapien V2 retailed for $250. To optimize the performance of the robot, as well as the amount of fun you get out of it, there are several tips you can exploit.
  1. Getting Started Tips

    • To get an idea of what the Robosapien V2 is capable of, the official "Robosapien V2 Manual" recommends that you first put the robot in "Demo 1" mode. You can accomplish this by pushing the "D" button on the included remote control. After pushing the button, Robosapien V2 will perform a pre-programmed dance routine. You can also push "Shift 1" plus "D" to activate "Demo 2," which will sequence the robot through a range of movements. After running the demos, you can push "Z" to put the robot in "Free Roam" mode. This mode allows Robosapien V2 to explore its surrounding environment using multiple, built-in sensors. Just make sure to put the robot on the floor -- and not on a table or other raised surface -- during "Free Roam" mode; otherwise Robosapien V2 could fall and become damaged.

    Control Tips

    • Robosapien V2 responds best to your remote control commands when you are situated directly in front of the robot. To simplify the control process, the "Robosapien V2 Manual" recommends that you imagine that Robosapien V2 is "your reflection in a mirror." The "Shift 1" button on the left side of the controller controls movements on the robot's right side, while the "Shift 2" button on the right side of the controller controls movements on the robot's left side. You can confirm which shift buttons you are holding down by referring to the controller's tri-colored LED. As examples, holding "Shift 1" and "Shift 2" will cause the LED to glow half red and half green, holding "Shift 1" and "Shift 3" will cause the LED to glow half red and half orange and holding down all three shift buttons will cause the LED to glow red, orange and green.

    Infrared Vision Tips

    • The Robosapien V2's infrared sensor allows the robot to respond to objects in its field of vision. However, because factors such as electronically dimmed lighting, fluorescent lighting and bright sunlight can impact the robot's infrared functions, for best results you should use the Robosapien V2 in shaded environments or in environments with traditional, incandescent lighting. Also, keep in mind that the robot's infrared vision system relies on reflection. This means that the Robosapien V2 will have an easier time recognizing and responding to reflective surfaces, such as mirrors, shiny metals and white walls.

    Walking Tips

    • You can control the Robosapien V2's walking by moving the controller's left control stick. For best walking results, place the robot on smooth surfaces, such as bare floors. If the Robosapien V2 has trouble walking on a particular surface, the "Robosapien V2 Manual" recommends that you change the robot's gait by pressing the "Y" button.
