How to Make a Jeopardy Buzzer

Making your own Jeopardy style audible buzzer is a great way to add a little authenticity to your home quiz show game. Whether you are playing charades, Pictionary or any other type of team game at home, there is always some confusion when it comes time to answer questions of just who answered first. If you build your own Jeopardy style buzzers, it will always be quite clear just who "buzzed in" first.

Things You'll Need

  • 9-volt battery and harness
  • 9-volt buzzer
  • Push button electric switch
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the negative and positive wires exposed from the harness that attaches to the 9-volt battery. On the battery itself, the positive side has the male connecting terminal, and the negative has the female connecting terminal.

    • 2

Connect the positive wire from the battery's harness to one of the two terminals on your push button switch. Strip a small amount of shielding from the ends of a piece of wire, and twist it together on one end with the exposed positive wire protruding from the battery's wiring harness, and the other end to one of the two terminals on the push button switch; it does not matter which. Cover any exposed wire with some electrical tape.

    • 3

Connect another length of wire between the push button switch and the 9-volt buzzer. Strip 1 inch of shielding off the ends of a length of wire, connect one end to the other exposed terminal on the push button switch, and the other end to one of the two terminals on the buzzer. Cover any exposed wire with some electrical tape.

    • 4

Connect the buzzer to the battery. Strip 1 inch of shielding from the ends of a third length of wire and connect one end to the exposed terminal on the buzzer and the other to the negative wire protruding from the battery's harness. Cover any exposed wire with some electrical tape.

Place the battery into the harness by pressing the corresponding terminals against the battery. When the button is pressed, an electrical current is passed to the buzzer, creating an audible buzzing sound, just as in Jeopardy.
