How to Make a Button Whirligigs

Many things that spin are called whirligigs. Pinwheels, wind-powered figures and propeller toys spun by vibrations are all called whirligigs. A button whirligig is the easiest of these toys to make and have been a popular toy for centuries. Search your button box for a large button with two holes. This button and a piece of string are all your children need to make a great rainy day toy.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread a 24-inch string through both holes of the button.

    • 2

Tie the ends of the string together to form a loop.

    • 3

Hold the knot in one hand and pull the button to the middle of the loop.

    • 4

Place the ends of the loop over your middle fingers and swing the button around in a circle between your hands so that the string on both sides of the button twists. Pull your hands out to the side to stretch the string. The button will hum and spin as you move your hands out and closer together.
