While they seem magical, glow sticks function in a scientific, methodical way. The glow stick is filled with chemical compounds. When you bend the glow stick until hearing a snap sound, you release the chemical compounds. The chemical reaction releases energy in the form of light. Once the chemicals are fully mixed and the reaction is complete, you cannot make the glow stick work again. However, if there is even a little light still being emitted from the glow stick, you can either brighten the glow stick for one last use or you can preserve it for another time.

• Drinking glass
• Hot water
• Towel
• Freezer

     Fill the glass with hot water.

     Place the glow stick in the hot water for 1 minute.

     Remove the glow stick and dry it with a towel. The warmer temperature will cause the glow stick to glow brighter.

     Place the glow stick in the freezer to temporarily stop the chemical reaction inside the glow stick. When you remove the glow stick from the freezer, it will begin to glow again.
