How to Build a Glider With a Shoebox

Using a glider can be fun and educational at the same time. Gliders can be made from a wide range of materials, one of them being cardboard. You can use the glider outside or inside, depending on your preference. Gliders are perfect for adults and children alike, and can be customized to your liking. They are guided using air and their wings.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape
  • Ruler
  • 8-by-10-inch piece of paper
  • 2 straws
  • Modeling compound (such as Play-Doh)
  • Lightweight cardboard from a shoebox, 2 centimeters wide and 13 centimeters long
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the piece of paper in half and lay it flat horizontally in front of you. Make five folds in the paper, each 2 centimeters wide. Tape the paper on the edge so it cannot unfold; this makes the wing of the glider. Tape the straws vertically to the wing of the glider ¾ from the top of the straw. This should leave ¼ of the straw from the wing.

    • 2

Fold the piece of cardboard in half, and tape it ¼ of the way on the back of the straw. The point on the cardboard should be facing up towards you.

    • 3

Roll two small balls from the modelling compound and place them on both ends of the glider on the wings. This keeps the glider balanced and will provide the right amount of weight for it to glide and soar.
