Grasp the yo-yo in one hand and the string in the other. Twist the string between your thumb and forefinger until the individual strands begin to unwind near the axle. Pull the string off the yo-yo once the opening between the two strands is big enough to slip over the outside of the toy.
Find the end of a new yo-yo string. Hold the string's end in one hand and grasp the string 2 inches from the end in the other hand. Position the string between your thumb and forefinger and begin to roll the string between your fingers. Stick a finger in between the two strands of the string once they begin to separate.
Let go of the end of the string. Pull your finger in between the two strands towards the end of the string to unravel it and form a large loop. Slip the open loop over one half of the yo-yo.
Position the end of the loop over the center of the axle. Twist the strands of the string together around the axle by rolling them between your thumb and forefinger.
Hold the loose end of the yo-yo string and let the yo-yo dangle at the other end. Lower the string until the side of the yo-yo is resting on the ground. Find the part of the string that is has high as your belly-button. Tie a knot at this point in the string.
Cut the string just above the knot with a pair of scissors. Making a 1-inch loop and tie a knot at the bottom of the loop to secure it. Fold the loop over the string and pull the string through the loop to create a second loop or slipknot. Slip the second loop over your finger to play with the yo-yo.
