How to Make Puppets With Movable Jaws

Puppets are a popular way of encouraging creative play for children and adults. Save up odd socks and create sock puppets using bits and pieces left over from other crafting projects. Instructions

    • 1

Draw an oval shape two inches wide and five inches long onto the cardboard. Cut the oval out of the cardboard. Fold it in half width ways. Using the cardboard oval as a pattern, cut out a piece of red felt.

    • 2

Insert the folded mouth into the sock with the curved ends facing the sock toe. Put your hand into the sock and over the mouth piece to make sure your hand is comfortable. If the cardboard mouth is too big, cut it down so that it fits the sock better. Cut off the toe of the sock one-half inch beyond the tip of the cardboard mouth.

    • 3

Remove your hand and flatten the sock with the heel on top. Put the folded cardboard mouth on the outside of the sock and trim the sock one-half inch from the rounded edge of the mouth.

    • 4

Put the mouth back inside the sock, open it and fold it back with the sock underneath. Put a dab of glue at each end of the mouth and press the edge of the sock to the glue. Trail glue around edge of each half of the mouth and press the edge of the sock to the glue. Let the glue dry.

    • 5

Glue the red felt for the inside of the mouth over the sock edge and the cardboard. Let the glue dry.

    • 6

Glue googly eyes onto the top of the mouth. Cut the wool into lengths for hair. Knot one end of a piece of wool, thread the wool into a needle and thread the needle from the inside to the outside of the sock where you want hair. Continue doing this until your puppet has great hair.
