How to Mod a Longshot

The Nerf Longshot CS-6 is a toy gun that shoots soft foam darts. To modify, or "mod," the Longshot so it will fire the dart with more accuracy, replace the spring inside the firing chamber. A partial disassembly of the Longshot will be necessary, using tools that most households already have on hand. The replacement spring can be acquired from a hardware store.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Replacement spring, 1/4-inch diameter

Instructions

    • 1

Pull back on the cocking rod at the back end of the Longshot. Upend the Longshot to allow any dart in the chamber to fall out. Click the trigger to release the tension from the spring mechanism that's inside.

    • 2

Place the Longshot on a table with the barrel facing to the left. Insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the seam at the top of the cocking lever. Wiggle the tip back and forth to separate the two halves from each other. Remove the screwdriver and pull the two halves apart with your fingers.

    • 3

Remove the seven screws from the gun handle with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the gun handle plate off the Longshot. Remove the two screws that are now revealed with the screwdriver.

    • 4

Remove the screws from along the top of the Longshot and from around the tip of the barrel. Remove the screws from along the bottom of the Longshot, from around the trigger and from the back end. Pull off the Longshot's plate with your fingers. Place the plate aside.

    • 5

Remove the screw from in front of the black plastic block that's at the inside top of the Longshot with the screwdriver. Pull the black plastic block out of the Longshot.

    • 6

Pull the orange cylinder out of the Longshot and place it on the table. Rotate the cylinder so that the front of the cylinder is facing you. Remove the two screws from inside the front of the cylinder with the screwdriver.

    • 7

Pull the black plastic cap out of the front of the cylinder. Keep pulling the cap until the spring rod that's attached to is out of the cylinder.

    • 8

Grip an end of the spring that is over the rod with the jaws of a needle-nose pliers. Twist the spring to enlarge the end. Continue twisting the spring until you can pull it off the rod. Pull the spring off the rod.

    • 9

Twist the end of the replacement spring to enlarge it. Place the enlarged end around the rod. Twist the replacement spring with your fingers to pull it over the rod so that it occupies the same position that the former spring did. Place the rod back into the cylinder. Reattach the screws to the cap.

    • 10

Place the cylinder back into the Longshot so that it occupies the same position that it did before. Place the black plastic block back into the Longshot. Reattach the screws.

    • 11

Place the plate back on the Longshot. Reattach the screws. Place the gun handle plate back on the handle. Reattach the screws. Place the two halves of the cocking lever back together.
