How to Make a Golden Compass

The Golden Compass, or alethiometer, is a truth-telling prop from the series of books by Phillip Pullman, "His Dark Materials." The alethiometer uses four arrows pointing to four of 36 symbols to answer questions that will reveal the truth of the question asked. Instructions

    • 1

Trace the large jar lid onto the cardboard twice. Cut out both circles and punch a hole in the center of each that is large enough for the brass fastener.

    • 2

Use the symbol list to draw the 36 symbols onto one of the cardboard circles. Cut off the edge of the second circle so that the symbols on the larger circle can be read.

    • 3

Paint the jar lid and second, smaller, circle gold. Punch a small hole in the center of the jar lid. Once they are dry gently press the larger circle into the underside of the jar lid.

    • 4

Insert the brass fastener into the center of the arrows, the two pieces of cardboard and finally the jar lid and secure the fastener loosely on the back of the jar lid. The arrows should move freely around.

    • 5

Use the pliers and gently fold the edge of the jar lid over the cardboard so the cardboard will not slip out of the lid. Spin the arrows so each one points to a different symbol.
