Things You'll Need
Instructions
Cut a 24-inch length of string or thread. You can use longer lengths if the toy will be used by adults or on the feet.
Thread one end of the string through one hole in the button and then thread it back through the other hole. If the button has four holes, thread it through two diagonal holes. Tie the ends of the string together and trim the excess. You should now have a loop of string threaded through two button-holes.
Insert the middle finger of each hand into the loop, and shove the button to the middle. Allow a bit of slack in the string and make a spinning motion with your hands so that the string begins to twist up on both sides of the button. Continue twisting the string until it becomes wrapped around itself all the way to your fingers.
Apply gentle tension to the string by pulling your hands apart. The button will begin to spin. As the spinning motion begins to twist the button in the opposite direction, release some of the tension on the string. Pulling and releasing the string tension keeps the button spinning. Speeding up the action causes the button to make a whirring sound.
Make larger versions of the toy for use with your feet instead of your hands. Use the lid of a round plastic container instead of a button. Punch holes in the center with a heated ice pick. Use sturdy string instead of thread. Insert one foot into the loop and use your hand to twirl the string. Once you've put sufficient twists into the string, slip the remaining loop over your other foot. Spin the disc by applying pressure and releasing pressure on the string with motions from your feet.
