How to Build a Two-Line Triangle Kite

Kite flying is a hobby that has been traced as far back as ancient China and possibly even Egypt. Even today, when the sun is out and the wind kicks up, kite flying fans can be found in abundance enjoying their sport. Eventually, you may want to make your own kite. With some string, wood, plastic and ingenuity, create your own two-string triangle kite.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a 2 1/2-foot dowel. This will be the kite's wing brace.

    • 2

Lay down two 3-foot dowels. Join them by slipping a piece of rubber tubing over one end of a dowel and then over an end of the other dowel. These will be the wing leading edges.

    • 3

Bend the dowels at the plastic joint into a 90-degree angle and lay them down so that the ends of the brace dowel hold the wings open. Join the brace to the wing dowels with electrician's tape.

    • 4

Cut the long edges of a plastic trash bag and spread out the plastic. Lay the kite frame on top of the plastic.

    • 5

Fold the plastic over the wing dowels so that they are covered. Carefully trim the plastic so you have an even tab all along the edges. Wrap the plastic over the wing dowels and glue the plastic tabs in place. Reinforce with electrician's tape.

    • 6

Trim the tail edge of the plastic so it is straight from wingtip to wingtip. Flip the kite over so the frame is on the underside.

    • 7

Find two spots on the wing brace, each approximately eight inches from a wing edge. Poke two small holes, one behind the brace and one in front, at each location. Tie a separate string through each set of holes and around the brace. This should give you two control lines.

    • 8

Cut a neat hole centered on the back edge of the plastic, and tie a ribbon through it for a tail.
