How to Make a Small Robot Pet

Robot building offers a creative hobby to immerse yourself in. Creating a small robot pet is not a costly or difficult endeavor. All the components necessary can be found in an existing, small RC car. For instance, the car wheels, circuit boards and remote control can be used to make your new pet. No prior experience with robot construction or electronic devices is necessary to make your small robot pet.

Things You'll Need

  • RC car
  • Scissors
  • Toy model glue
  • 2 Velcro strips

Instructions

    • 1

Find an RC car for your robot pet's components. A used but operable RC car is the best solution.

    • 2

Remove and discard the plastic shell of the RC car.

    • 3

Set aside the remote control for the RC car. You will use this to control your robot pet later.

    • 4

Use the wheel base as a platform for your pet robot. This also provides sturdy, efficient transportation across different terrains.

    • 5

Save the green receiver board and the black, circular battery pack from the RC car. Leave the two servos, which act as motors to power your robot pet, attached to the left side of the wheel base.

    • 6

Cut two Velcro strips in half with scissors. One piece should feature the "hooks" side of the Velcro, while the other piece should feature the "loops" side, making a total of four Velcro pieces.

    • 7

Glue four Velcro pieces, using model glue, to the body. Secure one of the pieces to the top center of the wheel base, then another to the bottom center. Place the third Velcro piece on the back of the receiver board and the final piece onto the back of the battery. Allow the glue to dry for several minutes.

    • 8

Affix the receiver onto the Velcro piece on the top of the base. The hooks will attach into the loops and hold the receiver in place. Place the battery onto the Velcro piece on the bottom of the base.

    • 9

Connect each of the servos into the receiver. The receiver board has a number of insertion points, or channels that exist on one end of the board. These channels have small openings to accommodate your components. A wire lead comes out of each servo. Insert each wire lead into a separate channel on the receiver.

    • 10

Insert the battery's two-wire lead into a separate channel on the receiver. Do not insert it into a channel with a servo, and ensure that both wires are in the same channel.

    • 11

Decorate your small robot pet. For instance, use the rest of the toy model glue to attach pieces of old toys or stuffed animals to the body. Attach other personalized items that have meaning to you. Alternatively, you can leave the small robot pet "as is" for a minimalistic look.

    • 12

Turn on the RC remote control to power up and control the movement of your small robot pet.
