How to Do the Somersault Yo-Yo Trick

In this digital world, full of video games and pixelated entertainment, old-fashioned skills are not only impressive, they're practical. Those who still know how to use vintage toys like the yo-yo are working their minds and muscles in different ways. Aside from cognitive development, learning yo-yo tricks is a simple way to unplug yourself for a bit and relax. Even someone with limited space can throw a yo-yo. Plus, once you learn the basics, tricks like the somersault are a breeze.

Instructions

    • 1

Go into a room or outdoor space with at least 4 feet of empty space all around you. You don't want to damage breakable items because your yo-yo got away from you.

    • 2

Wrap the string around the center of the yo-yo snugly, turning the yo-yo so the ring attached to the end of the string is on the top side of the yo-yo.

    • 3

Slip the ring over the middle finger of your dominant hand. Let the yo-yo rest gently in your palm, gripping it lightly.

    • 4

Bend your arm up, holding the yo-yo overhand-style near your jaw. Bring your hand down and flick your wrist toward the ground, performing the sleeper trick first.

    • 5

Quickly slip the index finger of your other hand under the yo-yo string, pulling it up at an angle toward your chest. At the same time, pass your dominant hand directly under the yo-yo, catching it on the string in midair.

    • 6

Saw the strings between your fingers back and forth for a few moments, then pull your dominant hand toward you and your other hand away from you, untangling the string and bringing the yo-yo back into sleeper.

    • 7

Bring your dominant hand up sharply to pull the yo-yo back into your hand.
