How to Do Magic Tricks With a Yo-Yo

A yo-yo is a simple toy that consists of a plastic round disk on a string. Magic tricks can be performed with the yo-yo while it is in motion. This makes it tricky to keep the yo-yo spinning while maneuvering the string to create the trick without getting it tangled. Lots of practice is needed to perfect some of the more difficult yo-yo tricks. Magic tricks with a yo-yo seem to create an optical illusion to spectators.

Instructions

    • 1

Perform the "Through The Tunnel" yo-yo move. Throw the yo-yo outward in front of you. Allow the yo-yo to fly around in a circle next to you without catching it in your hand. Lower the yo-yo on the next round so it touches the ground and rolls under you between your legs. Give the string a tug and the yo-yo will roll back into your hand.

Master the "Dog Bite" trick during which the yo-yo seems to bite into your pants and stays there. Put on baggy pants. Toss the yo-yo in an outward motion, giving it a strong spin. Stand with you legs open and swing the yo-yo string toward your open stance. The yo-yo will swing around the inside of your leg and grab onto the back of your pants and stop spinning. To the spectator, it will seem to disappear.

Perfect the "Spaghetti" trick. Throw the yo-yo downward in a strong motion to give it a strong spin. Slowly pull small bits of string up and hold them in the hand with which you are holding the yo-yo to create a spaghetti-noodle look. Cover your hand holding the yo-yo string with your other hand to protect your face. Give the illusion of eating spaghetti by putting your mouth by your hands and making a slurping sound as you gently let go of the string and tuck the yo-yo back to you.

Execute the "Boing Boing" trick by throwing the yo-yo downward to create a spin. Use your other hand to pull up on the string to bring the yo-yo up to your level. Use the hand connected to the yo-yo and put your finger just above the yo-yo on the string. Flip the yo-yo backward to create a loop with the string and the yo-yo. The yo-yo will be between your hands spinning on the looped string. Gently bounce the yo-yo upward against the top part of the string to create a bouncing rhythm.

Accomplish the "Elevator" trick by tossing the yo-yo straight downward creating a strong spin. Take your other hand and point your finger and loop the string, pulling it upward and folding it in half. Allow the string to touch and gently pull down with the hand connected to the end of the string holding the yo-yo. The yo-yo will then seem to be rolling up the string. The pulling-down motion creates this illusion of the yo-yo climbing the string.
