Yomega Yo-Yo Tricks

Yo-yos are a toy designed for children, but enjoyed by all ages. Consisting of a round body at the end of a string, the yo-yo is tossed down to hang, then pulled back up the string with the flick of a wrist. Yomega is a leading manufacturer of yo-yos, and lists a variety of tricks for performers to learn.
  1. Gravity Pull

    • The gravity pull is the most basic yo-yo trick, and the foundation of any yo-yo routine, as without it the yo-yo will be stuck at the end of your string. Flick the yo-yo down with an overhand motion, holding it in your upturned palm then flicking the wrist forward and letting go. As the yo-yo nears the end of the string, turn your wrist over and flick up to return the yo-yo to your hand.

    Forward Pass

    • The forward pass is similar to the gravity pull, however instead of throwing the yo-yo down and returning it, you throw the yo-yo forward. Grip the yo-yo overhand, being sure the string is wrapping around the side of the core that is farthest from your palm, then swing your arm forward. Release with a flick, then turn your palm face up and pull to return the yo-yo.

    Around the World

    • Once the forward pass is mastered you can attempt an around the world maneuver. First practice swinging the yo-yo forward in an arc, then bending your hand back and to the outside to cause it to rotate over the top of you. Once you are comfortable swinging, try the maneuver with an actively spinning yo-yo by starting a forward pass without the tug back to your hand.

    Sleeper

    • Sleeping is also known as killing the yo-yo, and causes the yo-yo to stop in place at the bottom of the string. To perform a sleeper, toss the yo-yo down but do not pull back up as it reaches the bottom. Instead turn your hand over but hold it steady. When the yo-yo reaches the end of the string it will freeze in place, spinning, but not returning to your hand until you tug up.

    Walk the Dog

    • The walk the dog is an advanced trick which requires sleeping the yo-yo. Once you have the yo-yo spinning in place, lower your hand until the yo-yo touches the ground. The spinning will cause the yo-yo to roll forward. Allow the yo-yo to roll forward until it reaches as far as possible, then return it to your hand with a tug.
