The pieces of an old jigsaw puzzle absorb smells from their surroundings. If the box gets wet, or the storage area smells musty, the pieces will stink. Remove the smell by airing out the jigsaw pieces and spraying them lightly with vinegar. The sun will dry up any moisture inside of the pieces, which contributes to the smell. The vinegar aids in absorbing the bad smell. The pieces won't warp from the vinegar because you only use a small amount.
