Electric Go-Karts for Kids

Driving a go-kart is the closest children can come to living their fantasies of being behind the wheel of a race car. There are two types of go-karts available for children: gas powered and electric powered. Because electric go-karts are considered to be safer as well as better for the environment, they are fast becoming the top choice of parents.
  1. About Go-Karts

    • Go-karts have been around for a long time and are generally found at amusement parks and centers specifically devoted to go-kart driving on a track. Most go-karts found in these locations are gas powered, but electric go-karts are sometimes used. In recent years the go-kart has become more affordable, especially with the advent of electric go-karts. This means more people are purchasing them for use on private property or on public go-kart tracks. Go-karts designed specifically for children are available; they are smaller and generally have less power than the adult versions.

    Types of Electric Go-Karts

    • There are several companies manufacturing electric go-karts. They are available in a few different types. Dune buggy style go-karts are a popular choice for kids; these have a cage around the kart. Some of these are designed for off-road use, and others are to be used on the track. There are also electric go-karts that are low to the ground, aerodynamic and resemble race cars. These are the type commonly seen at amusement parks. Beyond these two basic types, there are many different styles of go-karts available, including those built to resemble real cars and trucks. Go-karts designed for children fit their shorter legs better and have more safety features in place. Most of the different go-kart styles are available in a mini or kid-size versions.

    Electric Go-Karts Versus Gas Go-Karts

    • Electric go-karts are safer because there is less risk of fire or explosion in the event of a crash. Gas powered go-karts also release emissions just like a car, meaning your child will be breathing in fumes. Electric go-karts do not have this problem and are thus better for the environment. Electric go-karts generally require less maintenance and have a lower cost of ownership. Electric go-karts are also quieter than gas powered versions, making them easier on your child's ears.

    Safety Precautions

    • Although electric go-karts are safer in many ways than gas powered ones, there are still safety precautions you should take. Be sure your child wears a helmet at all times. If your child is involved in go-kart racing on a track, a race suit, gloves and appropriate footwear should be worn. Make sure that your child's go-kart is always in good working order.
