How to Fly a Boomerang

Boomerangs use their aerodynamics to return to the thrower in an elliptical flight. Thrown perpendicular to the ground, the boomerang makes its arc as it rotates during flight to fly parallel to the ground. Skilled boomerang throwers apply a precise snap of the wrist at the end of the throw to impart the correct amount of spin to bring their boomerang back to them in a controlled flight. Learn to throw a boomerang properly, and experiment with the power of your wrist snap until your boomerang comes back to you every time you throw it.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the boomerang by the tip of one of its wings. Hold the boomerang between your thumb and your index finger, with the flat side away from you when you hold it with your arm at rest to your side.

    • 2

Cock your arm. Extend your throwing hand slightly behind your head and cock your wrist. The placement of your arm and angle of your wrist should resemble a waiter as he holds a tray above his shoulder.

    • 3

Extend your arm toward your target and initiate your throw. Snap your wrist as your arm nears full extension, and let the boomerang slip from between your thumb and index finger. The motion is similar to that of an overhand throw. The wrist snap causes the boomerang to spin and return to you.
