How to Make a Round Parachute

A parachute is a device that can be attached to an individual or an object that is being launched or dropped to slow the rate of descent and prevent destruction and injury. Parachutes are typically made of nylon due to its strength and low cost. Parachutes of all sizes can be constructed. The size will increase with the weight of the object or individual using the parachute. Round parachutes are the most commonly available shape and small versions are typically used in the launching of small rockets.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark a circle on the nylon fabric that is 24 inches in diameter. Cut out the shape with a pair of scissors.

    • 2

Measure and mark a 1-inch margin around the edges of the fabric. Fold the fabric over on the margin line. Crease well and then fold over again on the edge of the fold. When this step is completed no raw edges should be seen.

    • 3

Thread the sewing needle or sewing machine and sew around the edges of the folded margins 1/2 inch from the edge.

    • 4

Measure and mark six pieces of nylon fabric that are 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Cut out the pieces with a pair of scissors. Fold each strip in half two times along the length so that each piece is 1/4 inch wide. Pin each piece with sewing pins and sew each strip along the middle. Remove the pins. These pieces will be the shroud loops.

    • 5

Fold each of the shroud loops in half horizontally. Slide the folded edge over the parachute body every 4 inches around the circle diameter. The loops should overlap the parachute body by 3/4 inch. Sew the shroud loops to the parachute body with multiple strips of stitches horizontally where they overlap the body.

    • 6

Measure and mark three pieces of parachute cord which are 48 inches long. Cut the pieces with a pair of scissors. Tie one end to the first loop. Tie the other end to the adjacent loop. Repeat this process until all three pieces are secured to the loops.

    • 7

Fold the parachute down and put your finger through each of the loops formed with the parachute cord. Tie all three loops together 3 inches from the bottom of the gathering point.
