Instructions for the Proto-OmniWing

Making and flying paper airplanes can be a fun way to teach a child about the ideas behind flight or kill an afternoon. The Proto-OmniWing is a specific type of model airplane that is designed to get the maximum amount of lift and distance every time you throw it. You can create your own Proto-OmniWing by following a few instructions. You will need scissors, tape and a flat surface to work on to create the plane.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper
  • Transparent tape

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the piece of paper in half by pulling the bottom of the page up to the top. Press down on the paper to form a crease in the middle, then unfold the paper. Turn the paper sideways so the crease is running up and down. Fold the top two corners down at a 90-degree angle, with the edge at the halfway point of the edge of the paper and the crease in the center.

    • 2

Make another fold on both corners of the paper, pulling the corner down so that the first fold you made lies underneath the second fold, and press down to begin forming the wings. You will now have a point at the top of the paper. Grab this point and fold it down until its point meets the point where the two folds meet in the center.

    • 3

Fold the wing sections in half once more, including the top point. Place a strip of tape down the length of each wing, with half of the tape hanging over the paper. Tape the flaps down to the main part of the plane.

    • 4

Fold the plane back in half using the center crease you made in Step 1. Pull down on the top of the wings and fold them over the outside of the plane so they are even with the bottom crease.

    • 5

Use the scissors to cut out a portion of the back of the plane while it is still folded. You will be cutting a small section -- less than an inch -- from the back with the center crease in the middle. This gives the plane a V shape.
