How to Put Together a Kite

Kites come in a variety of price points and sizes from large, exotic kites to the basic diamond kite. Most kite kits come with all the parts needed to assemble the kite, making it easy to put the kite together. With nothing more than a gentle breeze, the whole family can compete to see who gets their kite up the highest.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the kite kit and review the instructions given by the manufacturer to ensure you have all the pieces for assembling the kite. Most kits come with the dowels and string required to attach the kite and indicate this on the packaging.

    • 2

Unfold and lay out the kite on a flat surface, such as the floor if it's a large kite. The printed side should face the floor and the spine, already attached to the kite, is face up.

    • 3

Slide the spreaders, the plastic or wood dowels, into the connectors already provided on the kite. These hold the kite open so it catches the air needed to fly. If pockets are provided for the connectors, slide them back in after the dowels are attached.

    • 4

Turn the kite over and attach the string on the handle to the loop on the string attached to the front of the kite. This is the bridle and there is often a clip provided to attach the two parts. On some kites, there is a keel instead of a bridle, which is a flap with a hole for the string.

    • 5

Unfurl the tail, find a wide-open spot with a breeze and fly your fully assembled kite.
