Types of Noise Makers

Commonly used to cheer loudly at parades, sporting events or other celebrations, there are several types of noise makers that produce different kinds of loud noises. They are made and sold as toys, or as small, simple musical instruments. Some noise makers even have historical or cultural purposes.
  1. Clapsticks

    • Thin tubes of inflatable plastic sticks are clapped together to make a loud popping noise, hence the name clapsticks. Lightweight, easy to move, cheap and noisy, it's easy to see why these noise makers are so popular at celebrations around the world. They are also popular because they are easy to customize with logos or team names.

    Whistles

    • Classic high-pitched whistles create a shrill, loud sound, which makes them a good noise maker for celebrations or events. Some are used by blowing in the tip to create sound. Some are made of flexible, plastic pipe that users twirl above their head. The spinning motion whips air through the pipe which creates a turbulent vortex that vibrates the air. The result is a low-pitched, humming sound that varies in volume depending on the speed the user is spinning it.

    Horns

    • At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the popularity of the Vuvuzela stadium horn exploded. The Vuvuzela is a 2-foot-long plastic horn that produces a loud monotone sound that became one of the most memorable things about the World Cup. Other stadium horns are similar to the Vuvuzela, but produce different sounds. The sports horns used by NBA officials makes a loud, high-pitched sound because they are powered by gas propellants.

    Bells

    • Spectators at sporting events often shake hand-held bells of all different kinds to make noise for their home team. The most popular is the small cow bell, originally tied around cows necks to keep track of them. Farmers would remove the bells from their cows and shake them to support their local teams.
