Unique Playhouses for Kids

Playhouses offer kids the opportunity for all sorts of fun. You can make your own out of items found around the house or purchase them from stores or online. Imagination is the limit when it comes to playhouses. Kids of all ages enjoy creating a pretend world.

Castles
- Kids have fun building and playing in their playhouses.
  
  Make a castle playhouse using boxes, sheets and rope. Use boxes of all sizes to create the outline of the castle. Decorate the boxes to look like a medieval castle by drawing bricks or stones for the facade. Cut out windows and doors. Use sheets to form the ceilings of the castle. Attach sheet ropes to the walls or drape them over the top boxes of the castle. Whether it is a fairy tale princess home or the lair of a fire-breathing dragon, girls and boys both enjoy the castle theme.
Army Forts
- Army tents make unique playhouses. Boys can pretend they are heroes protecting the land from an enemy or that they are keeping civilians safe from invading life forms from other worlds. Attach ropes to your walls, and then drape sheets over the ropes. You can also make army fort playhouses by draping sheets and tablecloths over tables and chairs. For extra fun, make the playhouse outside. Hang sheets from low-lying tree branches or string rope from one tree to the next until the desired effect is created. Build two army fort playhouses for group play and allow kids to choose sides. These playhouses can also be used as bases for games like "capture the flag."
Pet Hospitals
- Stuffed animals make great patients at an animal hospital playhouse.
  
  Create a hospital playhouse for kids to play in. Use their stuffed animals, dolls and action figures as patients. Build the playhouse by hanging sheets or using boxes. Laundry baskets can be used as patient beds for the animals. Kids can use washcloths and clothespins for bandages and splints for the injured animals. To complete the theme, purchase accessories such as plastic stethoscopes, thermometers, reflex hammers, and nurse and doctor costumes online or in stores.
City Life
- Playing house is fun for boys and girls. Make a playhouse using sheets and boxes to create a frame. Use household items like pillows and cushions as furniture. Playhouses can be made in any size or shape, which makes them perfect for every household. Build multiple playhouses to create a special neighborhood. Stores, schools, police departments or fire stations are other ideas for playhouse creations within a pretend city. Boys and girls alike can entertain themselves playing house. If you use large boxes to create a kids' playhouse, you can hang towels from the cut out windows. Add details such as a mail slot and flower boxes to decorate the outside.
