How to Make a Pyramid out of Play Dough

Children love to build and construct using their imaginations. With simple, safe play dough, the possibilities are endless. To help a child construct a pyramid using play dough, start from the bottom and work your way up. Use simplified explanations that will make it easy for your children to repeat the process without having to ask for help again. You don't have to have any tools to shape a pyramid, but having a couple on hand to enhance the realism of the end project will add to the fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Flatten a piece of play dough to 1 inch thick and a little more than 4 inches wide. Measure your dough and, with your pencil, mark a 4-by-4-inch square. Press a ruler, edge-side down, through the marked lines into the dough until you have cut all the way through. Do this on all four sides, and save the trimmings, leaving an even 4-by-4-inch base.

    • 2

Make another square shape doing the same, only slightly smaller than the first square, about a 1/2-inch smaller. Place on top of the first square.

    • 3

Make another square another 1/2-shorter and place on top of the second square. Do so again, taking another 1/2-inch off for the fourth square, and placing it on top of the third.

    • 4

Make a cap by rolling a ball to about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Shape one end between your thumb and your index finger until it forms a point. Using your ruler, press four sides into the ball where each side will end in a point, forming a smooth pyramid tip with four sides.

    • 5

Use your scrap dough to smooth the difference between each square. If you are looking for a more realistic pyramid look, leave them slightly uneven as if the structure was made out of blocks. Use your pencil to draw lines for each individual block by gently pressing the tip into the dough and scoring it vertically.
