How to Use a Crayola Maker

The Crayola Crayon Maker allows lets you take old and broken crayon pieces and melt them together to create new crayons in crazy color combinations. Sold on the Internet and in many toy, home retail and craft stores, the Crayon Maker can be a fun activity for kids and a good way to teach them the benefits of recycling, including reusing their old crayons. Using the crayon maker should be done only with adult supervision and with children over eight years old due to the use of heat.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in the crayon maker and turn the power switch to "On." Open the lid on top of the unit.

    • 2

Connect both sides of the crayon mold, pushing them together to snap into place. Put one side of the mold into the frame and push down to snap it into place. Put the other half of the frame over the mold and snap together. There should be four locking tabs that are closed.

    • 3

Slide the frame into the front area of the unit. Push down on the tabs to lock the frame into position with the Crayola logo facing out.

    • 4

Unwrap the paper from the crayons to be used to melt into new crayons. Break the crayons into half or into quarters. Set three to eight pieces into each side of the tray, creating a single layer of crayons on it.

    • 5

Close the lid and turn the "Timer" knob clockwise to point at "Light On." A ticking sound will be audible. Wait about 12 minutes until the timer points to the pouring bucket icon and the light goes out.

    • 6

Turn the "Pour" knob counterclockwise in a slow motion until the knob points to the large pouring bucket icon. The melt tray will then tip into the mold.

    • 7

Wait 10 minutes for the timer knob to point at the unlit light bulb image, indicating that the crayons have cooled.

    • 8

Turn the pour knob clockwise until the melt tray moves to its original position. Open the lid and push up on the tabs to lift out the frame. Set the frame upright and allow the crayons to cool for at least 10 minutes before using.
