Things You'll Need
Instructions
Select the kind of robot you want to build. There are several different varieties and a your local hobby is a great place to get started. They will also have robot building kits which are a great option for first time builders.
Design your robot, or find a design online. Several websites like the Society of Robots have designs available, and programs like 3D CAD allow you to download robot templates.
Buy all the necessary supplies from a local hobby shop or online retailer. It's important to select a good sensor. This component is a small computer that allows the robot to detect external objects and move independently. Websites like Society of Robots have a number of comparisons available.
Lay out all of your materials and ensure that you have everything that is needed. A basic vehicular robot will need a motor, gears and a power source. You can also modify an existing toy like a small car, but select something with a large frame that can accommodate all the components.
Use toy pieces such as Lego to build a base for the robot. This can be any shape, but should be sturdy and large enough to accommodate the internal components.
Place the motor, gears and wheels in the base of your robot, and secure them in place using industrial glue.
Attach the power source to the motor and sensor. Wires should lead from the motor to the servos which are connected to the wheels. This will allow the robot to function. Test the robot to ensure that if functions properly.
Use the remaining toy pieces to cover the rest of the robot.
