Trash Cans as Instruments

Teaching your children to use found items as toys will save you a lot of money and hassle. Help your kids turn trash cans into instruments and they will while away the hours making (not so) beautiful homemade music. Save yourself a headache and set these projects up in the basement, garage or outdoors.
  1. Quick Drum

    • Turn over a heavy plastic bucket or trash can for a quick makeshift drum. Give kids wooden spoons or drumsticks to beat on the drum.

    Canvas Drum

    • Create a canvas drum by using a small circular trash can and a circle or square of canvas that falls over the rim on the open side of the can by at least 4 inches. Tape the canvas to the trash can, and then put a large rubber band over the canvas to secure it in place. Wet the canvas and allow it to dry. This will further tighten the drum. Once the drum is dry, give your kids wooden spoons or drumsticks with which to play their new instrument.

    Foot-Operated Trash Can

    • Add more dynamic to your trash can drum set with a small metal foot-operated trash can. Have your child sit on a stool so that he can operate the can with his foot, like hi-hat cymbals, or whack the top of the can with wooden spoons, drum sticks or metal spoons.

    Trash Can Lids

    • Take two metal trash can lids and let your child slap them together as if he were in a marching band. He can also balance the lids on heavy plastic buckets and play them like cymbals with his drumsticks.
