Outdoor Swing Sets for Kids

A good swing set is an investment that your kids will enjoy for years. One of the major benefits of a swing set is that it appeals to so many different age groups; this is one toy all siblings can enjoy equally. Before you choose a swing set for your backyard play area, you'll have to mull over all your options, including whether to purchase a ready-made one or construct one yourself.
  1. Choosing Materials

    • Think about which materials will best suit your needs. Some swing sets have wooden seats, while others are made of some type of metal, like aluminum. Wooden swing sets require more care to prevent problems like wood rot. These types of swing sets can also cause splinters, making them an unwise choice for younger children. However, wooden sets are generally more attractive, and a set designed to blend in with your landscaping can even add beauty to your yard. Aluminum sets may rust or become creaky over time and also require a significant amount of maintenance. However, they typically last longer than wooden sets, so if you need the swing set to survive more than one kid's childhood, aluminum may be the best choice.

    Buying a Swing Set

    • Walmart, Target and other large retailers usually begin selling swing sets in early spring for the onset of summer. You can also buy a swing set online. Sites like Kid's Creations (see Resources) sell and ship prepackaged swing sets that require minimal set-up. Some also allow you to design your own swing set or club house.

    Building a Swing Set

    • If you're looking to save money and give your children a truly unique gift, you can always build your own swing set. Sets can be simple A-frame designs or they can have more components like a slide or an attached jungle gym. Building a swing set is far more time-consuming and difficult than just buying a set and you'll need to have some knowledge of woodworking. A homemade swing set would be a cherished heirloom for years to come, but you'll have to consider the time and energy it will require.

    Caring for a Swing Set

    • Once you have installed your swing set, it will require some maintenance. Wooden sets can be stained once a year to seal the wood and protect it from rot and against the elements. For aluminum sets, car wax, baby oil or mineral oil work as sealants against harsh winter weather. Scuffs can be removed with sand paper or other abrasives, and you can use warm water and soap to do a simple cleaning of aluminum parts.
