How to Make a Light Saber That You Can Play With

The Star Wars film franchise is one of the most successful entertainment endeavors of all time. Spawning everything from television shows to video games to an ever-expanding merchandising line, Star Wars-related products are available in nearly every facet of life you could imagine. A popular element of the Star Wars universe is the light saber, a sword with a blade made of energy, wielded by the heroic Jedi knights and evil Sith lords. A toy light saber that is lightweight but durable can be made out of simple PVC pipe.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC Pipe, 1/2 inch diameter
  • Tape measure
  • Marker
  • Saw
  • PVC end cap (optional)
  • Spray paint
  • Foam sheet, 12 inches tall
  • Colored duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a length of PVC at 4 feet long and cut with the saw.

    • 2

Place an end cap on one end of the PVC, or cover the tip with tape to avoid the extra bulge of a cap.

    • 3

Spray the pipe with spray paint in your desired "blade" color. Fluorescent colors make for the best blades, as they resemble the light blades in the movie.

    • 4

Mark a rectangle on the foam piece, 12 inches long and 1 9/16 inches wide.

    • 5

      Cut out the foam piece.

    • 6

Wrap the foam around the base of the pipe at the end opposite the capped or taped end, and secure in place by wrapping with duct tape. The foam will create a 12-inch long handle
