How to Make a Foam Toboggan

A toboggan is an old style snow sled. The shape of a toboggan is simple. It is just a plank with a smooth bottom to get very little traction on the snow, with a curved front end. Some toboggans have a rope attached to them to hold onto. Kids have been finding random household and garage items to sled on for a long time. The modern invention of foam has improved inexpensive sledding, because foam is smooth, light and soft to land on if you crash.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a foam toboggan out of any piece of foam you can find. Find a foam plank of any kind. Use a pool float, an old foam yoga mat or even a foam toy shield. Put the slickest side face down to reduce traction on the snow.

Attach a length of rope to one end by cutting holes in either corner with a pair of scissors. Thread the rope into the holes, and then tie the rope in a double knot for durability. Ensure the loop is solid enough to hold onto while sledding.

Take the rope in your hands and sit on your knees on the other end of the foam plank. Pull the rope handle back so that you have a curved front end of your sled. Your sled is ready to ride.
