How to Wire a Power Wheel

Power wheels are small battery powered vehicles large enough to carry a child. These vehicles come in a number of different sizes and styles. Some are also designed to carry two passengers rather than one. Power wheels can run on a number of different surface types such as low grass, dirt, concrete and asphalt. These units have a very simple wiring diagram which includes the battery, the motor, speed controller and the electrical wire. Wiring one from scratch takes a little time.

Things You'll Need

6-volt battery
12-gauge red wire
12-gauge black wire
Wire cutters
Wire strippers
Screwdriver
Socket wrench set

Instructions

  Place the battery in the battery compartment. This could be in the front or rear of the vehicle. Make sure the motor is in position and secure.

  Run a red wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the positive terminal of the motor. Most of these motors will either have direct wire connections or a wire connector for connections.

  Verify that the speed controller is in position. It is usually connected to the gas pedal of the vehicle. Run a black wire from the negative terminal of the battery to one of the two terminals of the speed controller. Some speed controllers specify which terminal should be connected to the battery.

  Connect the second terminal of the speed controller to the negative terminal of the motor. Charge the battery if it has not already been charged. Hold the back two wheels off of the ground and press the gas pedal. The rear wheels should start to turn.
