How to Tie a Knot in a Yo-Yo

Yo-yoing is a fun activity for both kids and adults. It involves more than just making the toy yo-yo up and down the string; practiced yo-yoers pull off a wide-variety of tricks. For a beginner, before learning any tricks or even how to make the toy yo-yo, it's best to learn the basics. To start, learn how to tie two essential yo-yo knots. The first is the slipknot and the second is the double twist.

Instructions

  1. Slip Knot

    • 1
Cut the string if it's too long.

Unwind the yo-yo and set it on the floor near your feet. The string should reach your belly button. If it doesn't, you need a longer string. If it's longer, cut it so it's even with the bottom of your sternum.

    • 2

Tie a loop in the end of the string, so that the top of the loop is even with your belly button.

    • 3

Grab the string 4 inches below the loop and pull it up through the loop to form a slipknot. Slide your middle finger into the slipknot and pull the string toward the yo-yo. This tightens the slipknot around your finger and keeps the yo-yo string from falling off.

    Double Twist Knot

    • 4

Remove the string from the yo-yo and hold the loop open.

    • 5

Loop the string around the yo-yo's axle. Keep the loop open.

    • 6

Twist the string above the yo-yo, so that the loop becomes two loops. One is around the axle and the other is above it. Pass the loop over the yo-yo so two loops surround the axle. Keep the loop open. This step is like wrapping a rubber band around a deck of cards, according to How to Yo-Yo.com.

    • 7

Twist the open loop once more and loop it around the axle to form the double twist knot.
