How to Figure out the 2X2X2 Rubik's Cube

Since the 1980s, the Rubik's Cube puzzle has been challenging minds young and old. The toy has become a worldwide sensation, spawning many different varieties of the classic cube and even cube-solving championship competitions. Variations in size, color and even shape have been created to challenge seasoned Rubik's solvers. One such variation is a miniaturized, two-by-two cube that lacks the central anchor pieces of a traditional three-by-three cube.

Instructions

Find a white piece and turn the cube so that the white piece is on the upward-facing surface.

Solve the upward face. A face is one layer of the cube and includes the four colors on the surface and one block deep. Moving all of the white pieces to the upward surface and matching the colors on the first row directly beneath the white upward face. This can be done through a combination of three moves after the obvious moves have been made. The first move requires turning the right face toward you, the bottom face counterclockwise, and then the right face away from you. The second move is exactly the opposite, and requires that the front face be moved clockwise, the bottom face moved clockwise, and then the front face moved counterclockwise. The third move involves turning the right face toward you, the bottom face twice, the right face away from you, the bottom face clockwise, the right face toward you, the down face counterclockwise, and the right face away from you.

Turn the cube over, so that the white face is now down. Solve the opposite face, which is now the upward face. On most Rubik's Cubes, the color of this face is yellow. All the necessary pieces are either on the upward face or one of the side faces. They can all be brought to the upward face using two patterns. The first, properly titled 'Left Soon', involves turning the needed piece left counterclockwise, up counterclockwise, left clockwise, up counterclockwise, left counterclockwise, up clockwise twice, and then left clockwise. The other pattern is properly titled 'Right Soon' and involves turning the needed piece right clockwise, up clockwise, right counterclockwise, up clockwise, right clockwise, up clockwise twice, and right counterclockwise. It may take a combination of two or more Left Soons and/or Right Soons to get the pieces into place. At the conclusion of this step, both the top (white) face and the bottom (opposite) face should be solved.

Finish the cube by solving the last layer. Examine the cube to see if the final layer has any matching adjacent pieces. If so, orient them to the correct side. When no further obvious moves can be made, choose an unsolved side and turn the cube so that this unsolved side faces upward. Execute this series: turn the right face toward you, turn the up face clockwise, turn the right face toward you, twist the bottom face 180 degrees (two turns), turn the right face away from you, turn the up face counterclockwise, turn the bottom face 180 degrees again, and turn the right face 180 degrees. This will solve the cube.
