How to Make Water Toys

Kids love to play with water toys, especially on a hot day. It cools them down and helps them to get rid of their seemingly endless energy. Toys made with sponges are inexpensive, attractive and have endless possibilities for cooperative and creative play. You can also incorporate the sponges into games where a ball or bean bag is traditionally used.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 3 inch by 5 inch sponges in thirds, lengthwise. You can use two different colored sponges or only one. Try green and blue or orange and pink or red and yellow. Any combination of colors is fine.

    • 2

Line three sponges side by side. Place three sponges on top of those. Place three on top of those. The color combination does not matter.

    • 3

Wrap a zip tie around the nine sponge strips and pull tightly. Cut off the unused end. Repeat the steps and make a second toy.

    • 4

Dip the sponge toys in water and squeeze out the excess water. The children can toss them around to each other. Make a game where they throw the toys into baskets, or play "hot potato" with them.
